Here's How Adele's Ex-Boyfriend Once Tried To Cash In On Her Fame
Multi-Grammy winner Adele (this singer has 15 wins so far) has had a lot going on in her life recently.
For starters, she underwent a dramatic physical transformation, making a conscious decision to lose weight to achieve a healthier self. At the same time, Adele also divorced her husband Simon Konecki back in 2019. The singer has since struck up a relationship with sports agent Rich Paul.
Fans are certainly pleased that everything seems going to be right for Adele right now. After all, the singer has gone through a lot of heartbreak in the past.
In fact, one particular ex-boyfriend even once tried to cash in on her fame. The unnamed guy even relentlessly pursued Adele around the time that she had several hit songs on the air.
Adele’s Ex-Boyfriend Tried To Exploit Her For Money
Adele first shot to fame after releasing two singles, Chasing Pavements and Hometown Glory, back in 2008. It was part of her debut album 19, named after the age at which she started recording it.
Upon its release, 19 became a massive hit, reaching an estimated sales of 6.5 million copies around the world. The album features several songs about heartbreak and as it turns out, Adele’s inspiration for the tracks had been her own life.
Before Adele became a massively popular singer, she had been in a rocky relationship with a man that she refuses to identify to this day. That relationship a lot of her songs and as such, the ex-boyfriend claimed he deserved to get a share of her earnings from the album.
The guy reportedly called Adele nonstop, demanding financial compensation. “For about a week he was calling and was deadly serious about it,” the singer recalled during an interview with The Sun. “He really thought he’d had some input into the creative process by being a p****.”
That ex-boyfriend may have assumed he could get something from Adele but that wasn’t happening. Instead, the singer put him in his place.
“Finally, I said ‘Well, you made my life hell, so I lived it and now I deserve it,’” Adele recalled. And in case fans are wondering, it was the singer who had ended this volatile relationship. In fact, she dumped him without having to see him again. “When I broke up with my boyfriend I did it by text,” Adele told The Guardian, writing, “’Babe, I can't do it no more.’”
He’s Not The Only Person Who Has Inspired Adele’s Songs
For Adele, songs have always been personal. It’s the way she likes to communicate with everyone in her life, after all.
“I don't have a hole in my soul I'm not insecure in any way,” the singer explained. “What I think it is, is, I'm really awful at saying how I feel.” As she continued with her music career, Adele’s songs were inspired by things she would want to say to various people, including another ex-boyfriend.
As it turns out, her second album, 21, was inspired by another man, particularly the hit song Someone Like You.
“Adele came to the session with lyrics and melody for the first half of the verse at least – there was a real vibe and idea already,” Dan Wilson, her co-writer on the track, told American Songwriter.
“She told me she wanted to write a song about her heartbreak…that was how she put it. She told me a little bit about the guy who broke up with her, and I think maybe part of my contribution was to help keep the song really simple and direct—very personal.”
Meanwhile, Adele’s other hit song, Rolling in the Deep, was also inspired by another man, although he wasn’t the singer’s lover this time. Granted, she had just been through a breakup around the time she worked on the song. Its sound, however, was inspired by the singer’s tour bus driver during a music tour throughout the U.S. southern states.
“He listened to all this amazing country music and we’d rock out late at night, chain smoking and listening to Rascal Flatts,” Adele told Spin. “It was really exciting for me because I never grew up around [that music].” Of the track, the singer has described it as “gospel disco.”
Adele also made it clear that she’s not looking to reconcile with the ex in question. “It’s me saying, ‘Get the f*** out of my house’ instead of me begging him to come back.” Just like in the past, the singer never disclosed the man’s identity. Rolling in the Deep went on to sell over eight million copies worldwide, according to estimates.
Today, things are much better for Adele, much to fans' delight. Of her current relationship with Paul, the singer told Rolling Stone that it’s the "most incredible, openhearted, and easiest” one she’s ever had.
